COLLOQUIUM
SPEAKER: Dan Suciu, AT&T Labs
TITLE: Data Management on the Web
DATE: Tuesday, April 4, 2000
TIME: 3:30 pm
PLACE: 134 Sieg Hall
HOST: Alon Levy
ABSTRACT:
Your browser can fetch any page on the Web. But a business application
cannot retrieve data from another business unit, or from a corporate
partner. Sad but true: when companies merge, they exchange data by fax.
Today, standards committees, software companies, and academic research
groups are working hard to enable easy data exchange on the Web, and the
first achievement is a universal data exchange format: XML. In this talk
I will describe the new data management challenges raised by Web data,
explain why traditional data management techniques do not address these
challenges, and describe some of the solutions we proposed in AT&T Labs.
Specifically, I will describe: a query language (XML-QL), a tool for
exporting XML data from legacy databases (SilkRoute), the XML type
checking problem, and a compressor for XML data (XMill).
Refreshments to follow.
