TITLE:          Configuration, Customisation and Appropriation:  Integrating

Technology and Practice in the Placeless Documents System

DATE:           Tuesday, February 15, 2000

TIME:           3:30 pm

PLACE:                   134 Sieg Hall

HOST:           Alan Borning

ABSTRACT:

A key feature in the adoption of a software system is the extent to

which it can be appropriated into everyday working

practice. Appropriation is a feature of both the social setting and,

critically, the software design. We have been exploring these issues

in the design of the infrastructure and applications for Placeless

Documents. Placeless Documents is a fluid and flexible document

management infrastructure. Rather than the fixed hierarchies that

characterise most document storage systems, Placeless provides an

extensible, composable, associative storage model that accommodates

multiple users, multiple tasks and multiple application needs

simultaneously.

I will outline the motivations behind Placeless, and discuss the

design and challenges behind its implementation. I will then explore

how the issues of configuration, customisation and appropriation

emerged as aspects of our application experience, and caused us to

revise our technical assumptions.

Refreshments to follow.
