Subject: Upgrade to Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 Today
As part of our continuing effort to test products in an enterprise-wide environment before they are released to our customers, we encourage you to upgrade to Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 today! Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1) Release Candidate (RC) released to over 2500 U.S. and International beta sites including key Premier, OEM, IHV and ISV customers this week.
Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 is not required but recommended. Please update your Windows 2000 computers and provide feedback to mailto:chrisgra. When you update your Windows 2000 computers, you get the latest security, euro, geo-political and Windows 2000 reliability fixes. If you are not already running Windows 2000, this is a golden opportunity to leapfrog ahead to the SP1 version of Windows 2000 in a single installation. Many of our customers are waiting for SP1 before deploying Windows 2000 in their corporate and production environments. This is your chance to help influence the development and adoption of this product before it hits RTM!
· The RC build of SP1 is available for Redmond Campus rollout in English only.
· SP1 is available in 2 flavors, standalone and integrated. Standalone allows a Windows 2000 user to update their PC with the latest set of SP1 hot fixes. The integrated version allows those users not yet running Windows 2000 to upgrade to Windows 2000 with SP1 in just a single install session.
· The RC contains a 444-day evaluation expiration period. If you install SP1 on pre-installed Windows 2000, you will need to re-install the Released to Manufacturing (RTM) version of SP1 Standalone to deactivate the expiration period. If you install the combined integrated build of Windows 2000 and SP1, you will still need to re-install the RTM Standalone version to deactivate the expiration period. If you do not re-install the RTM versions of SP1 when it becomes available by the end of the 444-day expiration period, you will need to re-build your machine from scratch.
· SP1 updates are focused on the following areas:
· Windows 2000 setup
· Application and hardware compatibility
· Security, including the latest updates for known Windows 2000 security issues
· Reliability, including stress and blue screen issues.
· SP1 Standalone can be applied to all Windows 2000 products (Professional, Server, Advanced Server).
· SP1 by default is 56-bit encryption; however if the machine has Windows 2000 encryption pack applied, the encryption level stays at 128-bit encryption after SP1 has been installed.
· Final product is expected to release to web and manufacturing around Q1FY01.
· To view the Readme.htm go to \\products\public\Products\Betas\OS\Win2000\SP1\READMESP.HTM
· If you have installed the Beta or other pre-release version of SP1 prior to this RC version, you should install this RC over the top of your existing SP1 version. DO NOT uninstall as you may experience problems which may require you to again reinstall the service pack.
· For detailed installation notes and a list of updates go to <\\products\public\Products\Betas\OS\Win2000\SP1\READMESP.HTM>
· If you have Windows 2000 installed, select the following link to start the installation: <\\products\public\Products\Betas\OS\Win2000\SP1\i386\update\update.exe>

· CDs will be available from receptionists in building 26, 27, 28, 42, Red West D and Sammamish B. Note that on the SP1 Standalone CD that sp1network.exe does not work. Please run setup via the autorun or i386\update\update.exe when installing from the SP1 Standalone CD.
